A site in several languages looks like triple the work: every text written again, prices kept in sync, nothing forgotten after an edit. Built the right way, it is simpler. Here is how it works on my sites.
Why several languages. In Bulgaria a client may search in Bulgarian, a tourist in English, a Russian speaker in Russian. If the site speaks one language, the others leave without reading your offer. Each version also gets found in search in its own language.
How it works:
- One site, three versions. Each language has its own address (/en, /bg), so a search engine shows the right one and a person switches with one button.
- The language picks itself. The site looks at the country and the browser language: a visitor from Bulgaria gets the Bulgarian version, others get Russian or English. A manual choice is remembered.
- Texts side by side in the admin. Title, description and price sit in one place in three languages. An empty translation field is visible at once, so it is hard to forget one.
- Machine translation as a draft. A "translate" button fills the other languages, and a person polishes the wording. It is faster than translating from scratch, and the final text does not sound machine-made.
- Prices and contacts in one place. Change them once, they change in every language.
What to check before you order:
- Every language has its own address, not just a switcher script on one page.
- Page titles and search descriptions are translated, not only the visible text.
- You can edit translations yourself, without a programmer.
- The layout survives long words: Bulgarian and German run longer than English.
What it costs. A landing page starts from 300 EUR, and the second and third languages are priced separately by the volume of text, so the project is not multiplied by three. More on price: how much a website costs and what drives the price.
You are looking at one such site: three languages, a shop and a blog. Tell me about your task in two lines: kovalev.trade/websites
